Building a team for your business Starting a new business is a big deal and a huge commitment – and having the right team in place can be critical to your success. The importance of your team and why it matters While the business concept is important, the people who will be implementing that concept are often even more important. Do they have the needed expertise and experience?

Why is the team so important? Here are a few reasons:

Expertise: Having a team of experts can bring a wealth of knowledge and skills to your business – this can be especially important in the early stages of a startup. This is when you may be facing new challenges and making important decisions. A team that is dedicated and works well together can help keep the business on track and moving forward, even when faced with obstacles (and there will be a lot of these I hate to say). Resilience: Starting a business can be a challenging process, and it’s important to have a team that is resilient and able to overcome obstacles and continue moving forward. A team with experience – whether it’s success or failure – can be especially resilient, as they have hopefully learned from their past experiences – and are better equipped to handle challenges.

Where to find your team

If you’re a solo founder, you may be wondering where you can find team members who are interested in joining your startup. Here are a few places to look: Your network: Your personal and professional networks can be a good place to start. You may know people who are interested in joining your startup or who can refer you to potential team members. Professional associations: Joining a professional association or networking group in your industry can be a good way to meet potential team members. These groups often have events and networking opportunities – these can be a great way to meet like-minded people and sort out ideas and hunches you may have about your business idea. Online communities: There are many online communities and forums for entrepreneurs and startup founders, and these can be a good place to meet potential team members.  

My favorite method for finding team members:

Go to Reddit, GitHub, Slashdot, Bitbucket – or even CraigsList or other similar sites where people are discussing programming or looking for gigs – and post something saying that you are looking for a partner in a start up.  Be very clear about the experience that the people should have before contacting you and that this is not a paid gig but an equity poor maybe equity plus cash gig. You may be surprised to learn that many people who are very talented have jobs that are a little boring for them and they are simply looking for a fun challenge and a new side project and they are willing to get on board with you.  I have personally use this technique successfully several times!
Put the word out on social media: You can also use social media to connect with people in your industry or to advertise your startup and attract potential team members. Learning all you can about how to use social media will be smart and is highly recommended. Incubators and accelerators: Incubators and accelerators are organizations that provide support and resources to startups. Many of these programs have a strong focus on building teams, and they may be able to connect you with potential team members. Overall, the team is an important factor to consider when starting a new business. A strong and experienced team can bring expertise, dedication, and resilience to your startup, and can be an attractive quality to investors. While it can be frustrating and challenging to build a team as a solo founder, there are many resources and opportunities available to help you find the right people to join your startup.

How to attract new team members – and reasons why would they want to join you

There are many reasons why someone might want to join a startup team, and as a founder, it’s important to understand what these motivations might be in order to attract the right team members

Most of the time, your potential team members are looking for a chance to make a lot of money due to your business getting acquired, or becoming very successful.

This isn’t always the case however… sometimes a person is just looking for an engaging project or a challenge.

Here are a few reasons why someone might want to join a startup team:

Opportunity to make an impact: Many people are attracted to startups because they want to be part of something that has the potential to make a significant impact. They may be drawn to the opportunity to shape the direction of the company and to contribute to its success.

Potential for growth: Startups often offer opportunities for team members to take on new responsibilities and to grow their skills and experience. This can be especially appealing to people who are looking for career advancement and want to be part of a company that is growing and evolving.

Work culture: Startups often have a different work culture than larger companies, and this can be attractive to some people. Many startups have a more collaborative and dynamic work environment, which can be appealing to those who want to be part of a team that is working together to build something new.

Ultimately, potential team members come onboard because they believe in your vision and trust the founder

I learned from past employees that the reason they were willing to come onboard with my startup was that they believed I had the vision and ability to create a successful business. I didn’t understand early on that the way they thought about me, the founder, and their level of belief and trust in me, was a key driver for their willingness to become involved.

To entice people to join your startup team, it’s important to communicate your vision, your goals, why it matters and whatever benefits you have to show them how they can be a part of something that is meaningful and has the potential to make a real impact.

You can also highlight the growth opportunities that are available and the unique work culture that your startup offers. It’s also helpful to be transparent about the potential risks and challenges of working at a startup, and to show how you are addressing these risks and building a sustainable business.
